5 Tips to start learning languages

  • Make language learning a part of your everyday life

The more you practise listening, speaking, reading, and writing on a regular basis – as opposed to simply doing homework – the more language will flow naturally and the easier it will be to remember what you've just learned.

  • Organise yourself

To create that flow, look at a standard week and allocate time to watch a movie, with or without subtitles, read a simplified book, write sentences to practise new verbs/tenses/language points, listen to the radio. It's better to start small and do more than you'd originally planned, because you're actually enjoying yourself.

  • Be consistent

As with most things in life, consistency is key. Four hours of intense work, once every month, or when you can, will not cut it. Try to do a bit every week, even if it's 20 minutes here and there.

On weeks when you have more time and energy, you will do more. On weeks when you have too much on or are feeling tired/ill, sit back, relax, and watch a movie in the language you're learning with English subtitles on. Your brain will still pick up language as you watch.

  • Choose the right tools

Instead of an app or a video found on Youtube, choose proper tools made by official sources, like educational publishers, who know about language learning. Being a native speaker does not a teacher make.

  • Have fun

Yes, it's possible! By using your interests/hobbies/passion/vocation to learn the language with blogs/website/videos/books/articles on the subject matter, it will not only be easier, because you already know about it, but your interest will carry you further than you think is possible.
