Here's a fun, food-related, French idiom for you:
''Couper la poire en deux'' = to cut the pear in half, i.e. to compromise.
Why a pear? Good question!
All we really know is the expression showed up in fiction at the end of the 19th century. As with most idioms, it's almost impossible to pinpoint its origin. But as I always say to my students who look at me with surprise when I produce one out of my sleeves, the fun of idioms lies in how strange and silly they are! And, surprise, surprise many French idioms are about food!
Don't hesitate to send me your questions.
